      • Want to Join the Best new Startup in London?

We're recruiting charismatic professionals to join our friendly & ethical language services business. Our Lingo Locals are highly vetted and trustworthy individuals, that add value to our clients through their experiences, skills and expert knowledge of the sector(s) within which they operate. Read on below to learn about our business, and if you're a good fit, we'd be delighted if you'd join our freelance community.

      • We select the very best multilingual professionals that speak 2 or more of these languages fluently (one natively, and including English)
      • Benefits of Becoming a Lingo Local

Below are just a few of the reasons why we think you'll want to get involved.

        Earn great money

We pay well to attract the best candidates, capable of establishing our brand as the market leader. We use Merit Bands to facilitate proportionate pay which we supplement with generous bonuses and performance incentives. See our pay chart below.

        Flexible hours

We want to enable your work life to fit around your home life and to actively support you to achieve your goals. There are no minimum hours that you'll have to work, and you can specify when you're available, for how long, and on which days too.

        Varied tasks

Variety is the spice of life and we're very keen to empower you with a varied, enjoyable, sustainable and rewarding career. With multiple services to choose from, you can find the ones that suit you best and offer them as little or often as you like.

        Happy clients

We accurately match clients to freelancers so it's very likely that they'll be happy with the work you deliver. It's also likely that you'll have a natural affinity and plenty to talk about; increasing the potential to build a great professional relationship.

        Extra pay

In addition to calculating pay for each task based on your Merit Band and (if applicable) average production speeds, we also pay for required research and preliminary conversations, and for any travel time required too.

        Keep 100% of tips

We encourage clients to leave ratings and reviews following any interaction with our language professionals. If they score you a 4 out of 5 or higher, we invite them to leave a tip to show their appreciation.

        Professional training

Lingo Locals wanting to gain experience in new sectors can pay matched professionals for training (divisible by groups of up to 4) which we reimburse through reduced commissions (i.e increased earnings) when you start working in that sector.

        Professional development

Lingo Locals mentor those in lower Merit Bands working in their sector(s) for 1hr every 10hrs they work with clients. In turn, the mentee mentors a less-experienced professional, or provides services as part of our charitable Free Services Scheme.

        51% profits to charity

We donate 51% of our profits into our own charity that aims to maximise our social impact, through carefully considered partnerships, projects, group initiatives and means-tested direct personal subsidies.

        Free services scheme

In combination with our Professional Development and charitable contributions, we offer free services to those most in need, that can't afford them. This could be refugees, low-income families, or any other demographic identified by our partners.

        Language-based communities

We aim to catalyse strong communities using social groups on our digital platforms and through monthly well-supported gatherings in London. We hope to create the most enjoyable language-based communities, built around you.

        The best admin staff

We carefully select admin staff that are passionate to make a difference to our freelancers and clients alike. They work for a probationary period so we get to know the real individuals before inviting them into the family on permanent contracts.

        We're ethical

We put our professionals, our partners and our clients before profits, and always will. We're committed to making ethical decisions that protect the people that we care about, as well as the environment and the cities in which we operate.

        Helping the economy

We actively support business growth during these testing times and put an emphasis on helping ethical and impactful clients to thrive. We also help businesses communicate with their international contacts amidst a testing time caused by Brexit.

        Holiday pay

Following guidance on the government website, holiday pay will be calculated on a pro-rata basis equivalent to 5.6 weeks per year for full-time contracted staff. Those graduating from probation have 3 month's allowance added automatically.

        Merit Bands

We've developed a simple framework for organisation called Merit Bands; enabling clients to instantly ascertain a freelancer's ability and experience. It also improves interactions between your colleagues in our community forums.

        Nothing to lose...

You've got absolutely nothing to lose by registering with us today. The application process doesn't take long, isn't difficult, doesn't cost anything (unless you need a DBS certificate) and your information is safely stored and never shared with third parties.

      • Requirements to Become a Lingo Local

If you like the sound of what's written above and think you're a good fit with what's written below, take the first step in becoming part of the Lingo Locals family today.

Legal right to work in the UK

You'll need to have a legal right to work in the UK and be London based. Whilst some of our services can be delivered online, we're keen to create local nationality-based communities, so our focus is on recruiting those that live in or near the capital.

        English fluency

Because we're based in London and most of our admin staff only speak English, you must be fluent in it. Also, because it's likely you'll have to interact with the public, our Lingo Locals always have to speak the primary local language.

        Multilinguists

Lingo Locals must typically be native in one and fluent in at least one other of our Tier 1 languages (English, Mandarin, Arabic, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese), including English. Fluency in any Tier 2 language is also a bonus.

        Education

Most applicants are undergraduates, graduates, or post-graduates of Tier 1 language degrees, but there are also opportunities for those with less formal qualifications. We also value references and proven experience in your sector(s) of interest.

        University students

We love to work with students because they're surrounded by supportive peers, and are invested in building a bright future. We provide fun, flexible, rewarding work that will enhance your prospects and could improve your grades significantly too.

        Experience

We need evidence and references from previous employers or clients wherever possible. Those with substantial experience can fast track our probation period and could also become trainers or mentors for those with less experience.

        Professionalism

Your attitude and professionalism are as important to us as your education and experience. You'll be representing the company when meeting clients face-to-face, online or via email, so it's important that we can trust you implicitly in all situations.

        Nationality

We welcome applicants of any nationality that's associated with a Tier 1 language, if they meet our recruitment criteria. London is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world which makes it the ideal place to launch a business like ours.

        Age limits

There are no upper age limits for online services, however, if providing in-person services you must be able to meet the demands of likely tasks. The lower age limit to work for us is 18, providing you meet our other selection criteria.

        Physical health

We're keen to provide meaningful work for as many people as possible, but we do need to ensure that in-person activities are unrestricted. We, therefore, require that those wanting to meet clients are fit to conduct likely task requirements.

        Background checks

We need to ensure you're a safe prospect, so we ask for a scan of your passport and to verify your phone number, address, qualifications and experience. We also ask for references where possible, and for links to social media profiles.

        Criminal record check

You can elect to submit a 'basic' Disclosure and Barring Service check (or equivalent) to make you more marketable to clients. Freelancers wanting to work with children must have an enhanced level of criminal record check.

        Personal behaviour

You'll be an ambassador of the company and must act appropriately at all times during the delivery of your selected services. This means being polite and courteous and putting the needs of the client above your own where necessary.

        Discretion & trust

It's likely that you'll be working with some very private clients and businesses, so it's of paramount importance that you keep anything disclosed to you strictly confidential. You'll also have to sign our Employment Contract and an NDA before starting.

        Task ownership

Once you've accepted a task it's entirely down to you to execute it to the highest standards, within the set parameters. We're looking for professionals that can motivate themselves to work effectively without constant micro-management.

        A positive mindset

We appreciate you're probably juggling lots of other stuff so we're looking for people with the mindset to take on additional challenges. We want you to add value to clients and surpass their expectations so they request you by name in future.

        Presentation

When offering any client-facing services, including online, it's important that you're well presented and look professional. It's also important that you have a tidy and quiet environment to conduct video calls from, should the need arise.

        Technology

You'll need a computer with 4GB+ RAM, virus protection, Microsoft Office and a video camera with a microphone. High-speed internet capable of supporting video calls and large file transfers unencumbered is also required.

      • The Registration Process & Onboarding

Below is an overview of what happens when you register and then start working with us.

Which sectors are right for you?

We're recruiting individuals with experience in the specific sectors for which they're applying. Once we have a critical mass in each sector, we'll initiate our Professional Training Programme to enable writers to move laterally into new sectors.

        The registration form

We use the latest encryption protocols and take the security of your information very seriously. We've designed the form to be as simple and user-friendly as possible and we've incorporated expandable question sets for simplicity too.

        Interviews

Once your application has been reviewed, verified, and selected, we'll invite you to schedule an interview via Zoom. It's an informal chat where we'll ask about your experience and goals and review your home working environment.

        Notification & contract

Soon after you've completed your interview we'll email you to tell you whether or not you've been successful. If you have, then we'll attach your contract, a non-disclosure agreement, and any other pertinent documents for you to complete.

        Non-disclosure agreement

We ask you to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). It works both ways and should reassure you that we won't disclose your personal information to third parties unless legally obliged to. It's industry standard and doesn't affect any of your rights.

        Questionnaire

Once onboarded, we ask you to complete a questionnaire to help match clients to the Lingo Local that best meets their needs. For example, if on a tour of the city, they might want someone with kids that knows the best child-friendly activities.

        Career management

You'll be assigned a Line Manager that will offer pointers and direction regarding how to improve or develop yourself based on customer feedback, our own observations, and best practices determined by the sector-specific community.

        Rating & reviews

After each interaction clients rate and (if they want to) review the Lingo Local that's been working with them. You must maintain an average rating of 4/5 stars or higher and undertake additional training to rectify repeated low ratings, or leave the platform.

        Probationary period

To motivate freelancers to learn the ropes quickly, to improve quality, and to incentivise maximum effort and professionalism, we have introduced a 6-month probationary period, which can be reduced to 3-months if you complete 200 hrs.

        Training

Initially, we're only recruiting those with great experience within the sectors that they're applying to work in. As soon as possible, we'll open up our Professional Training Programme which enables you to get trained by a well-matched professional.

        Mentorship

We'll implement our Professional Development Scheme when we've achieved a critical mass of freelancers in each sector. Once activated, you'll be able to receive free mentoring from a senior Lingo Local working in your sector(s) of interest.

        Newbie groups

We know that it's daunting to start a new job and learn the ropes on your own; which is why, when you join we'll introduce you to 3 other people that are also new to the same sector(s). We'll match you as accurately as possible for a natural affinity.

        Community forums

Our Facebook community groups are intended to encourage interactions; to discuss best practices, ask questions, and share materials or experiences. They're also a great place to network and make friends to support you throughout your career.

        Security & file storage

Sensitive information regarding the company or our clients must be protected from third parties at all costs. In accordance with our Company Security Policy, we expect you to take precautions to ensure information security is carefully upheld.

        Travel

There's a requirement to travel within London to meet clients when delivering in-person services, or to attend training and social events. We pay for your travel time up to 30 mins each way and compensate you for rail tickets or petrol costs.

        Money back guarantee

One of our main value propositions is that we offer a money-back guarantee. If clients have legitimate grounds to be unhappy, we'll return their money and void your payment for the task. If you dispute their claim then we'll mediate accordingly.

        Document submission

Another value proposition is that we thoroughly check the credentials, qualifications and certificates for all of our professionals and admin staff. We'll ask that you submit proof of all your documents, with references where applicable too.

        Bank account & payment

We pay you in British pounds and require that you have a bank account capable of accepting them directly. Once the task is complete we forward your payment to you on the next business day, with weekly payments for longer corporate tasks.

        Next steps...

Submit the registration form and documents. If successful, we'll interview you within 2 weeks. If approved, we ask you to sign a contract and NDA and invite you to join the appropriate Facebook groups, and then start matching you to tasks!

      • Likely Questions & Additional Information

Below are some answers to questions we think you might have. If there's anything else you'd like to know, please don't hesitate to get in touch by email at enquiries@lingolocals.com

        Why launch in London?

It's where we're from and it's one of the biggest cities in the world with a huge footfall of travellers and a thriving business community. It's the most multicultural city on earth, and 37% of residents are also 1st generation immigrants.

        Are stringent checks necessary?

Agencies provide pre-vetted linguists, available at short notice, with a level of oversight that makes them accountable for their actions. To ensure our freelancers provide the highest quality services, we do need to conduct extensive checks.

        Am I safe meeting strangers?

Clients have to submit a photographic ID and make a payment to us; so it's much safer than meeting a stranger. Other freelancers have been as carefully checked as you have, so you can be comfortable that they're also relatively safe to meet.

        When would I get paid?

Payment is made following the completion of any task and subsequent sign-off by the client. You email them a Completion Form that asks them to rate and review you, and if they want to leave any tip. Longer tasks are paid weekly.

What happens if I have to cancel?

We appreciate 24 hrs notice, but will still note it on your profile (to identify patterns). If you cancel with under 24 hrs it's a 'close cancel' of which you can have 5 per year. Within 3 hours it's an 'emergency' and needs full justification to get further work.

What happens if I make a mistake?

If you realise you've made a mistake, or it gets noticed on one of our quality assurance spot-checks, you need to rectify it; remember they're entitled to a full refund. Inform your Line Manager of any issues that might transpire ASAP.

        Will I receive support?

You can ask questions of your Line Manager and can get advice and support from your Newbie Group or the Facebook Community Groups for your sectors. Our Operations Team is also always available to support live tasks whenever needed.

        Can I provide several services?

You can provide as many services as you're qualified for. Through our Professional Training Program, you can also move into new sectors in future. Offering multiple services enables variety, greater flexibility, and more fulfilment too.

What hours do I have to work?

You can work as many or as few hours as you want, and can also specify which days and hours you're available for. You can change your schedule by emailing your Line Manager (or updating your profile once we've built the technology).

        How is the business structured?

Lingo Locals Ltd is registered in the UK, company number 11694371. We've currently got no parent company or subsidiaries but do intend to set up a charity that owns 51% equity to simplify the process of making a social impact.

        Who runs the business?

We're founded by Chris Aram. He spent 6 yrs as an Army Officer and is determined to solve some of society's biggest problems after witnessing the disparity in wealth & living conditions throughout the world, during his work and travels.

Would I get a say in decisions?

We're very keen to get feedback from our professionals on any big decisions that we make about the business. We aim to create regular questionnaires and will always welcome your feedback, opinions and suggestions.

What is your policy on solicitation?

Solicitation of a client to conduct business without us will result in a lifetime ban. It costs a lot of money to find clients, to sustain our admin staff, and to develop software. If you don't think we're fair or add value to you, it's time we part ways.

What happens if I leave my degree?

We're excited to provide students with better paid, more relevant employment that also potentially enhances their grades and improves their future prospects. If you drop out you'll need to discuss your personal situation with us.

        Who pays referral commissions?

Referral commissions come out of our marketing budget and not the referral's wages. It's also not billed to the client either. This means that you can rest assured that it's in your friend's or associate's interest that you introduce us.

        How were Tier-1 languages chosen?

English was essential as we're based in London. We then looked at which nationalities visit the most and do business with the UK, with a slight weighting towards the languages spoken in the next few cities we're planning to launch in.

        Which languages will you cover?

We aim to incorporate every language that we identify demand for. The long-term goal is to cover every mainstream language in every major city. If you're interested to learn when we include your language pairs, follow us on social media.

What cities will you be in next?

It's difficult to say because we need approval to operate in cities. We also have to secure partnerships and recruit local admin staff. That said, we're looking closely at New York, San Francisco, Paris, Dubai and Hong Kong.

        How does charitable funding work?

We aim to support charities in the cities within which we have a physical presence; so initially, while we're only operating out of London, any charitable projects that we initiate or support will be in the UK, with a focus on the capital.

Is there a Lingo Locals union?

In addition to our Community Groups that enable you to network and interact, we'll run regular polls to garner the opinions of our contractors. We'll also fund assigned volunteers to form a council that focusses on working practices & welfare.

Is the information I provide you safe?

We take security very seriously and appreciate that you've entrusted us with a lot of personal details to power our matching algorithm. We promise to protect your data from third parties and we encrypt all the information that we store.

Do you keep ratings rewards money?

If your client awards you a 5-star rating then you earn more money. Any unearned 5-star ratings reward money goes into a pot that we use for training and freelancer improvement initiatives that raise the standard of our services.

        How are 'Experience Levels' decided?

A Local Guide that's never offered a certain tour would be a Level 1. If they've delivered the tour many times and can add exceptional added value and insights, then they're a level 5. Anything else falls somewhere in between.

        What about the Coronavirus?

Due to COVID-19, we're focussing on online services initially. We're adapting to meet the emerging demands of clients, and anticipate that online tuition and language services will remain popular. We're flexible about the future.
